What kind of sandwich requires no condiments? A sandwich made from Hillshire Farm® Polska Kielbasa!

My grandfather was in the army so my dad grew up all over the world and spent a lot of time in Germany. Some of my grandmother’s favorite recipes are German-inspired. My dad has always loved German food so naturally we love Oktoberfest! We recently visited Breckenridge, CO for their annual Oktoberfest celebration for the 2nd year. It is literally a festival I will not miss, in part because of all the amazing food.

But to be honest we don’t really drink in our house so Oktoberfest for us isn’t about drinking beer, but it sure does give a nice flavor when you cook with us. Carmalized onions are one of my favorite foods and topping that on Hillshire Farm® Polska Kielbasa…you will not find a better sandwich!

What you will need:

Hillshire Farm® Polska Kielbasa (1 package make 3 sandwiches)

shredded cheese

5-6 russet potatoes

olive oil

1 bag hoagie buns

1 large yellow onion

2 bottles of beer

Now head over to Walmart like I did and look in the meat section for the Hillshire Farm® Polska Kielbasa. I went ahead and bought 2 packages because I never know how hungry my family is going to be!

First cook your potatoes. Turn your oven to 400 degrees. Scrub and wash your potatoes. I used 5 large russet potatoes.

Dice up the potatoes as small as you can.

Drizzle olive oil on top of potatoes.

Then sprinkle with Italian seasoning and Cajun spices. Cook at 400 degrees for 30-45 minutes or until potatoes are crispy. I like to get a wooden spoon and move the potatoes around halfway through cooking to make sure they are not sticking to the pan.

Now onto the carmalized beer onions. Cut up a large yellow onion into strips. Then put your pan on medium and pour about 1 tablespoon of olive oil in the pan.

While that is cooking, pour 1 bottle of beer into a large pot.

Grab your Hillshire Farm® Polska Kielbasa and cut it up.

I cut mine into 3 equal pieces.

Add it to your pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and let simmer while your onions are cooking.

You want a nice brown color to your onions so keep cooking them until they start to turn brown. But you do not want them to burn.

Once they are brown add 2 tablespoons of beer. Turn off the heat and stir the onions until all the liquid is gone.

Now time to assemble your sandwiches! I used hoagie buns for my sandwiches since these are large sausages!

Lay your sausage in the buns first.

Then top with cheese. I went with shredded Mexican blend.

Then top with potatoes.

Lastly top with caramlized beer onions.
